About Names

ALF is derived from one or more of the following, take your pick:

• Named after Alfred Nobel
• The better half of “HALF”
• Abstract Lattice Framework
• Artificial LiFe

The SourceForge ID for the project is "alfve" and the title: "ALF (VE)." We could not use the simple "alf" because that SourceForge name was taken. As the initial focus of some core developers is distributed, agile business collaboration, we appended the "ve" for "Virtual Enterprise." But the intent of the project is to address other needs including:

• Planning, training and control of military operations
• Telecom optimizations
• Financial risk management
• Gaming, both for amusement and planning
